Sling: A Sustainable and Innovative Portable Speaker

Redesigning the Speaker Experience with Kyungil "Jack" Chung

Sling, a portable speaker designed by Kyungil "Jack" Chung, challenges the conventional notion of sustainability in audio devices. Inspired by the shape of a split log, Sling combines a unique form factor with an innovative mechanism to reduce energy waste and actively involve users in making a positive impact on the environment.

Sling is not your typical portable speaker. While many believe that the environmental impact of such devices stems from the materials used, Chung recognized that energy waste during idle time is the main culprit. With this insight, he set out to create a speaker that would change user behavior and encourage energy reduction.

The power control of Sling is operated by a magnetic sensor on the facing sides of the two speaker units. By placing the units serially, the speaker is turned on, and separating them turns it off. To make turning off even simpler, users can pull the cord, causing the speaker units to close and enter a closed position for easy carrying.

The design of Sling also prioritizes sustainability in its materials. The side surfaces of the speaker are covered in fabric, which not only adds a natural texture but also contributes to the speaker's overall eco-friendliness. The inner frame is injection molded, ensuring durability and structural integrity.

Measuring at 60mm x 60mm x 210mm, Sling is compact and portable, making it ideal for on-the-go use. Its Bluetooth capabilities allow for wireless connectivity, providing convenience and flexibility in any setting.

Chung's research on the environmental impact of portable speakers, including CES analysis of benchmark products, informed the design process. The aim was to create a solution that actively changes user behavior without introducing discomfort. The result is a mechanism that raises user awareness of energy-saving practices while remaining comfortable to use.

In recognition of its innovative design and commitment to sustainability, Sling was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category in 2016. This prestigious accolade is given to creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.

Sling is not just a portable speaker; it is a statement about the importance of energy conservation and user involvement in creating a better world. With its unique form, innovative mechanism, and sustainable design, Sling offers users a truly exceptional audio experience.
